Santa visit abt 1963 |
Our family has been heeding the expertise of scientists and medical professionals during COVID-19. So far we've been able to avoid the virus and we would like that to continue. We don't like physically distancing from so many loved ones, but we have too much to look forward to so we don't want to take the risk of getting sick. We also don't want to add to the burden medical professionals and local leaders are dealing with as this pandemic continues to rage.
That said, today we're planning an intimate holiday dinner for a couple of people in our pod of approximately 6-7 people. Since we don't know if we'll be able to see this couple at Christmas, we'll have a old fashion Christmas dinner today. The house is decorated so it will be a festive occasion. We'll play some Christmas carols in the background too.
Our plans for Christmas are taking shape too. On Christmas Eve, we'll take a festive holiday hike with family members who have chosen not to go into others' houses. I'll send them home with with a Christmas Eve picnic basket complete with holiday treats and a bag of gifts too. Our family will enjoy the same Christmas Eve treats--likely a simple easy-to-heat up holiday meal, cookies, and cocktails.
For Christmas Day, we'll have a delicious brunch and a nice dinner of some kind. I'll do some research in the days ahead. I'm not sure when we'll exchange gifts. We'll probably play some games and watch movies and sports games too. We'll gather via ZOOM to reveal our holiday grab names and exchange holiday cheer as well. I made the little video below to remind family members of past celebrations to kick-off the ZOOM meeting.
It will be an unusually intimate holiday this year, but we'll make the best of it. I have a great fondness for stories of the westward movement, and it's likely that our celebration will, in some ways, replicate the intimacy, but fortunately not the hardship, that many pioneers experienced so long ago. Onward.
