Old photos

Choosing the Christmas tree @1998

Today is my son's birthday which moved me to sort through old photos looking for a few remembrances of good times with my son. Going through the old photos brings up so many stories and emotions. It also makes me think about what constitutes the good times and not so good times.

Our good times were mainly those related to holidays, birthdays, vacations and adventures. Those are the times we took the most pictures of and the times that stand out in my memories from the past. The old pictures also make me think about the traditions and times I want to replicate in the days ahead with and for my own children and their loved ones.

In addition, looking at the old photos years ahead makes me see things I didn't notice at the time. I noticed relationships and personalities I wasn't fully aware of. For example, a family member I always thought about as quiet, is cheerful and full of life in every photo. I think I misjudged that individual. Also, times when we relied on my mom a lot were clearly times of stress for her now and then--that comes through in the pictures. And times when I was overworked versus times when I had what I needed are also clear as you look through the photos.

Christmas @1971

The old photos tell a story of our life including stories of important relationships, emotions, and experiences. Now, I'll sort through the images with a number of themes including people's personal time lines, significant relationships over the time, and family history--the family tree. It's not the job I had scheduled for today, but since the energy is right, that's where I'm headed. Onward.
