My son heads back to college soon after an extended homestay since Thanksgiving. We'll miss him, and like all parents do, I'll worry too about his health and safety in the months ahead. He's proved himself to be dedicated to his studies and the many teams and groups he belongs to, so I'm not worried about that. Mainly, I hope he continues to regard pandemic precautions with care so that he doesn't get the virus in these final weeks prior to his vaccination.
As I think about my young-adult sons, I wonder about the world they'll live in. The Capitol terrorist event and the bogus leaders who have abused us and still abuse us makes me fearful for the futures of our young people. Yet, now with Joe Biden at the helm and many members of Congress and local leaders who have been tireless with their good work, there is hope.
I'm also thinking about how I can support my sons, what I can do to support their good living in as many ways as possible while also respecting their individual paths, interests, relationships, and goals in life.
Today, I'll pack a basket of staples for my son--staples that will help him to make good food for himself and his apartment mates. I'll discuss my hopes for his safe behavior and good decision making in the months ahead, and remind him that we're here should he need help or a listening ear. Onward.
