Impressed and lured by wealth and privilege?

Many are impressed by wealth and privilege.

I think we can all say that we've dreamed of having more at one time or another.

But, as we think of the lure of wealth and privilege, we have to temper ourselves and recognize that this lure in many ways is a dangerous bait.

Why is the lure of wealth and privilege a danger?

This is a danger because this lure can prompt people to make bad choices, hurt others, and oppress.

These are the dangers of wealth and privilege.

  1. Some people equate wealth and privilege to betterment--they think that those with more money are better and smarter when the reality is that goodness and intelligence occurs among rich and poor--the rich don't have a monopoly on this.
  2. Some people only think you are worthy if you are rich and privileged; they will negate your ideas, your work, and your needs because they judge you by your wealth.
  3. Wealth and privilege is sometimes the result of inhumane acts in the present or in the past--many who are rich and privileged are the recipients of wealth earned by oppression, money and practices that gravely hurt others.
  4. To be rich and privileged often blinds you to the needs and reality of everyday people--you can't imagine the needs and potential out there because your wealth and privilege has blinded you to it.
  5. To be rich and privileged can make one lazy too.
Not all wealth and privilege is used or earned in negative ways. I remember a wise Jesuit priest telling me, It is not money that is bad, but the way one uses it can be bad. Some come upon wealth and privilege in honest ways--they have talent, opportunity, and/or luck--they, via multiple truthful and honest means, accrue wealth and privilege, and some use their wealth and privilege well for the greater good. I don't think the idea of a truly equitable society is ever true as there will always be a differential in what we earn, the wealth we have, and the talents and opportunities we enjoy. Yet, I do believe it's possible to create a society where everyone has the means to live a good life with fair income, just working conditions, clean environment, healthy recreation, and the opportunity to get involved, be heard, and make better. That is possible.

As I consider the theme of wealth and privilege, I want to remind myself that we have to be careful not to equate wealth and privilege with right and good--right and good is demonstrated by a person's acts, not their income. I support laws that foster fair taxation, voice for all, and strong, vibrant communities where everyone belongs--this is good. And, I have to be wary of the lure that wealth and privilege can be when it comes to supporting causes, people, and events that take others down and harm who we are as a people.
