Trump lessons: what not to do; who not to be

Trump's terrorizing term in office billboarded who we don't want to be. His self-serving, apathetic, ignorant daily actions oppressed most of us, and created chaos, havoc, violence, bigotry, injury, and death.

Trump lashed out at the American people continuously--it was daily abuse by this errant President who was more concerned with his place on the front page news than lifting up the American people, lands, and government.

He was a total time- and money-suck. Rather than working with a team of best and brightest, he turned the executive branch into the rogue Trump club--a place where people work together to prop up their personal wealth, privilege, power, and pleasure in any way they can no matter whether it is lawul or not and no matter to the lives hurt or ended in the meantime.

Trump terror has taught has what not to do and who we do not want to be. These lessons are valuable.

Truth matters

Trump's focus on consistent lying, propaganda, and exaggeration was dangerous. Studies show his misinformation campaigns spread the pandemic in dangerous ways leading to almost a 1/2 million deaths, grave illness, severe limitations and lost livelihoods. Most recently, Trump's misinformation campaign about the election also led to death, injury, terror, and obstruction of justice at the Capitol. Trump does not value truth, and he has illustrated the oppression and struggle his lies led to day after day after day.

Love matters

Trump has spewed hateful rhetoric and theater towards countless good Americans continuously. His hatred incited massacres and murders of innocents. His hate speak has also created greater divide, prejudice, vandalism, and oppression throughout the country. The way he has targeted one American after another has caused considerable stress. This focus on hate has wasted our time, money, and lives. Rather than Trump-like hate perseveration, a focus on love is much better and holds great promise for good lives.

Hard work matters

Trump chose to forward his strange freak-show entertainment, rather than do the challenging work of leading the country. His speak demonstrated that he had a weak grasp of government matters or the facts to do with any important situation. Instead, he focused on his "entertainment" factor to put his name on the front page of newspapers and Internet news. He played golf a lot, but didn't appear to spend much time actually doing the hard work that it takes to be a responsible, positive, and productive government leader. Like Trump, the cronies, family members, and political favors he led with also appeared to be energized only when it came to serving themselves thus resisting any hard work for the people.

Inclusivity is essential

Trump led with mostly White cronies--there was little diversity in his leadership teams, and that fostered a narrow, self-serving focus. His team staffed mainly by family members, friends, and political favors, did not represent the great diversity of ideas, needs, perspectives that exists in the United States, and the fact that he did not appoint a diverse leadership team is another reason why he was a weak president.

Empathy, compassion, and care are vital

Trump showed little compassion or care for the American people--it was always about him. While facing the greatest pandemic in a century, a pandemic that killed and sickened many, Trump rarely demonsrated any empathy, compassion, or care.

Collaboration matters

Trump always sought to be number one. He made it difficult for scientists and other experts to do what was necessary to mitigate a deadly pandemic. He seemed unable to work with others for the common good--instead his obsessive focus on his own fame and gain obstructed the good work possible. In contrast, when people are willing to recognize and work with each other's talents, strengths, challenges, experience, and knowledge in collaborative ways, we serve one another much better.

Trump has been a giant, oppressive weight on so many of us for the past four years. Every time he spewed hate, ignored the hard work, lied, and skirted or broke the law, we were harmed, hurt, abused, and oppressed. I will be so happy when he's far gone from the White House, and I am so happy that Joe Biden has asked such a talented, diverse, experienced, intelligent, and committed team to join him to lead us forward. Onward.
