Recently I was disappointed by a leader that I respect. The leader was unable to understand an issue I hold dear. I do believe I understand where the leader is coming from, and I even tried to reach out to garner a more reasonable response to no avail. In my opinion, the leader's perspective lacks breadth and depth on the issue.
So what do you do when a leader you've respected for a long time disappoints you? First, it's important to acknowledge that leaders are not superhuman, and with respect to the past year, well-meaning, positive leaders have been working nonstop--they have to be exhausted and somewhat discouraged too. Leadership during a pandemic has not been easy. Also, no leader can see issues from all perspectives--that's impossible. No leader will satisy you all the time. With this in mind, it's important to be respectful and understanding.
As for issues you wish would be treated better, you have to do what you can to move the needle in the direction that you believe are better. You also have to be open minded to others' points of view listening for new perspectives and ideas.
Leadership is tough. I am grateful for the many leaders in my midst, and as for issues where we disagree, I'll continue to advocate for what I believe is a better way--I'll keep an open mind too.
