I will use this checklist to guide my listening today. |
Today as I listen to Trump's defense lawyers, I will listen for the following:
Facts
Since Donald Trump is known to be a pervasive liar, I am watching to see if his defense team will presents facts or lies.
Argument
I will listen to see what their main arguments are. It has been reported that their main arguments are that the trial is not constitutional and that you cannot try a former President.
The trial established on day one that it is a constitutional trial. That has been decided and should not be the focus of today's trial, and the House Manager's already gave significant evidence that yes, a former elected official including the President of the United States, can be tried after their term because if they cannot be tried then any elected official can act lawlessly without recourse during their final days in office. This makes sense. If any of us broke the laws in dangerous, destructive ways in our final days at our jobs, we would certainly be held accountable for that action.
What I really want to hear from the defense team is the following:
- Did Donald Trump spread misinformation for the past six months to anger his base?
- Did Donald Trump illegally try to change the vote?
- Did Donald Trump give a thumbs up to violence time and again during the last six months?
- Did Donald Trump brand his election fraud efforts Stop-the-Steal to make his loyal followers wrongly believe that the election was stolen, and did this make his loyal followers angry and untrusting towards a free and fair election?
- Did Donald Trump plan, financially support, and participate a Stop-the-Steal scheduled for the day and time of the electoral college vote certification to obstruct that just certification process?
- Did Donald Trump tell his loyal, angry mob of followers to go to the Capitol at the time and date of the electoral college certification and did he repeatedly tell them to fight?
- Did Donald Trump watch the carnage for hours without doing his constitutional duty to defend American citizens? Did he sit back and watch it happen without stopping it?
- After the deadly, illegal insurrection, did Trump tell the insurrectionists that he loved them and did he celebrate the event by saying that they will never forget the day?
