It was interesting to hear the impeachment managers make the case that there can be no unity without accountability while Trump's defense tem argued the opposite stating that the impeachment trial would cause divide.
Of course, I agree with the statement, there is no unity without accountability. To simply negate an impeachment because you are worried that it will hurt people's feelings and create disagreement is definitely the wrong thing to do. If you allow elected officials to abuse their power and put the people they serve in danger without consequence, you create a very dangerous and deadly precendent that will forever harm our unity as a country.
We are a country of laws, and no one is above the law. When elected leaders begin to obey the law only when it is convenient or advantageous for them, we have a problem. Whether they like it or not, all elected officials in Washington take an oath to be faithful to the United States Constitution, and their job is to stay faithful to their oath of office or work to change the laws in peaceful and lawful ways.
The statement that there is no unity without accountability holds true for any group we belong to. Every sports team that is successful knows that accountability to one another as well as the team's regimen and rules is paramount when it comes to the team's unity. The same is true for families, work teams, arts groups and more. Accountability is essential when it comes to unity.
