Out of your hands

I'm a big fan of personal responsibility and doing what you can to help a situation when you can, but sometimes, situations are simply out of your hands. For those of us who like to know, act, make better, it's difficult to take that giant step backwards and step aside.

At other times, we may be the ones responsible--the one who does the work while others step aside. That may be true because we're the ones who have the knowledge or skill to deal with the situation. It could be because we're the ones who are nearby, accessible. When we're there and have what it takes to deal with the situation, it's up to us to do our best.

Everyday, in typical times, when children are left at a school doorstep, it is up to the professionals in that building to care for the children well and teach them with as much skill and care possible. The same is true at hospitals or other health care agencies, when a patient arrives, we trust that the medical professionals will do their best, and this is also true with government agencies--we expect that those who we elect and hire to serve the publice, will do that with as much fidelity to oath, skill and dedication as they can.

When issues and events are out of your hands, you have time to consider all aspects of a situation--time to figure out where your role and attitude is, and who you might be helpful from the sidelines.
