What you see and hear is not the whole picture

An individual regaled me because he inferred that a few actions of mine that he was privvy to summed up who I am. This individual found the specific actions distasteful, actions that are somewhat common and relative to a situation we have in common. I could understand the individual's distaste for the actions as that individual and I are experiencing the situation with differing perspectives and mindsets. Neither perspective or mindset is either wrong or right, but instead different based on our varied life experiences, personalities, quests, and beliefs.

What I found alarming about the judgement was that the individual made a decision about who I am and what I do based on a few small actions amongst a background of 1,000's of actions I engage in regularly. The actions of note are one relatively small pieces of the puzzle that I am.

Experiencing this somewhat castrating assessment made me realize that we have to be very careful about how we judge others because people are far more complex than the few words you may hear or actions you may see. So, it's okay to perhaps share some opinion about a few actions or words, but it's not okay to sum up a person based on a narrow perspective. Onward.
