In truth, I don't believe there is a better person, but instead lots of people journeying ahead to their better selves. Who's better depends on the context you are in. If you're lost in the woods, the better person is the one with outdoor survival and navigation skills. If you are getting ready for a special occasion, the better person may be the person who has a sense of style. Time and again, better people show up with the what seems like the ideal skills, attributes, property, and more that matches the situation.
We look to "better" people often for inspiration, guidance, and direction. We may even envy those people from time to time thinking they have it all. In truth, no one has it all and no one is without good qualities or capacity. Yet, we know that some do seem more fortunate than others, and in our own lives their are times and situations that we are better or less suited for.
I always say to myself and my children, When you play the compare game, no one wins. That's because in truth, in the game of life it is not about winning or losing, but about living your best life for you and your situation. Constantly judging yourself against others leads you down a dismal path where you miss out on your own value, good living, and potential.
So as I journey ahead, I will coach myself not to be fooled into thinking there is a better person, but instead recognizing that we're all journeying ahead in our lives to be the best that we can be, and as we journey ahead we will be inspired by those around us who are making good choices, living good lives, and solving the kinds of problems we may encounter. Those people may inform us, mentor us, inspire us, or guide us ahead, and similarly we may do that for others.
Typically when I see an individual, I notice their strengths and struggles by the way they hold themselves, what they talk about, and the choices they make. I value the sum of all that they are. I'm not looking for perfect people, but instead real people living their lives with interest and good energy.
That, to me, is a helpful and positive perception. Onward.
