Goal obstructions

Recently I wrote about nagging goals that you simply don't meet. I suggested that when that occurs, you may need an expert's help. I took my own advice and hired an expert team for a tough goal I face. That expert team has already taught me a lot as they coach me forward with my goal. I can easily see why I wasn't able to reach that goal without their help now. Bottom line, I didn't know enough, and I am still learning.

So as I work towards meeting this goal, the addition of expert help has definitely been a plus, but the challenge has other dimensions that I'm working on too--dimensions that include the need to tweak the routine, schedule, mindset, and related activities. How can I do that?

I thought about the many challenges that obstruct my ability to reach this goal--like road bumps, these challenges slow down my ability to close in on a win. A lot of these challenges have to do with  mindset, as you need a strong, steady mindset to make the changes needed to meet a goal with positivity and strength. Impatience is another obstruction, often those goals worth reaching are not overnight-successes, but instead the result of long term effort and focus. And, this goal requires more thought--it's not a natural behavior for me, but instead a set of behaviors that require new learning and lots and lots of repetitious practice.

As parents and teachers, I think we too often forget the focus, repetition, self-coaching, patience, and tweaks needed to help our children and students achieve tough goals, and only when we put ourselves in the position of trying to reach a goal do we understand what it takes to climb those goal mountains in your life.

Each week, I renew my focus of attaining this goal with the following actions:

  • Review of the small wins
  • Reminder to be patient
  • Tweaking the related schedule, routine, and behaviors
  • Working with the experts
  • Positive self-coaching
  • More action, less thinking - not overthinking
I love working to meet a challenging goal, and this is especially rewarding when you work with a good team and your goal carries with it meaningful change and results.

Onward.
