Thanks to the amazing scientists that invented the COVID-19 vaccines and all those who made the distribution of those vaccines a success, the world is opening up again. Many of us are taking a tentative step forward into this new world, and as we step forward we want to regain the beloved traditions we lost while still retaining the pandemic silver linings we found. The truth is that we've changed--a year of pandemic limitations has had an impact on us, and we don't want to forget that as we move into this new post-pandemic world.
Losses
As we move forward, we are bringing the losses we experienced with us. Many lost loved ones, and many more lost out on wonderful celebratory traditions and expectations. High school and college seniors lost out on their final years of school and all the celebrations that go with that. We missed our usual holiday traditions and the trips we love to take. Eating out didn't happen for the most part nor did visits to music or the theater. Some lost jobs and other opportunities too. We have to acknowledge the losses and the impact those losses had on us. We have to find ways to make peace with that.
Silver Linings
To survive the pandemic days, people focused on silver linings. We have to bring those silver linings forward. For me that means bringing forward more nutritious, delicious home cooking, outdoor adventures, gardening, greater intimacy with those I love, and appreciation for the wonderful relationships I have.
A Return to the Traditions We Love
And now, we slowly begin to return to the traditions we love. I was reminded of that this morning as my son's sports team began connecting related to the fall sports' traditions. For a good year, the athletes, their coaches, and their families missed out on the fun that healthy sports competitions bring to life. There's a sense of excitement with the hopes that next year will bring back a sports season as we know and love it.
Travel is another tradition I love and I can't wait to embark on again. We traveled a bit last year, but it was with great restrictions. Soon we'll take our first short trip--I hope we can regain some of the freedom we've enjoyed with trips in the past. I also hope we'll be able to return to wonderful family and holiday traditions soon.
Trepidation
I'm sure that many of us will move forward with a bit of trepidation as we don't want illness to spread again. We'll watch the news, follow the guidelines of public health officials, and do what we can to llimit more pandemic spread.
The good news is that the world is beginning to open up again--let's make the best of this, and do what we can to avoid a return to pandemic life. Onward.
