Today I thought about the significant mindset moments in my life. Moments when I thought about something that changed me forever.
Hurt
When I was very young, I received a special gift. Envious of the attention I was getting and the gift I received, a sibling decapitated the special doll I received and threw it into the mud. I was deeply hurt. It was the first grave hurt of my life--I was six years old.
Revelation
In kindergarten, my wonderful teacher, Ms. Ball, showed us slides of Holland. It was the first time I realized the world was greater than my neighborhood and family. I felt the thrill of that revelation throughout my body--a revelation that spurred my curiosity from that moment onward.
Empathy
In my pre-adolescent years, I was angry at some of the ways I was treated in life. I wanted to blame and judge others, but instead, I coached myself to understand why they were acting the way they were acting. That was my first, strong introduction to empathy, and a welcome, positive mindshift.
Puppy Love
In third grade, I had my first crush. The chubby boy was very funny. I loved the way he made me laugh, and looked forward to the moments when he spoke in front of the class. I always liked boys a lot, and had many loves and crushes after that time.
Nature
My dad always brought us on adventures in nature. I loved those hikes, picnics, and explorations. The most memorable was the first time I reached a mountain peak. The air was fresh and the view amazing. In a sense, I'm always reaching for that top-of-the-world feeling in almost everything I do.
Agree to disagree
After many years of trying to connect with family member who approached life much differently than me, I agreed to disagree. That brought great peace to me and increased my ability to love and respect that family member.
It's all over
There have been moments in life when I chose to end a friendship, job, lifeway--those were thoughtful moments when I realized that the negative aspects of the relationship or activity was much greater than the positive aspects. Those have always been hurtful moments, but when I gave the moments good thought, I knew it was a right choice.
Speak your truth
I have always spoken my truth. Sometimes my words have been more graceful and thoughtful than other times, but I am pleased to have spoken my truth with as much respect and care possible.
We all have significant mindset moments and choices in life. I'm sure more will come to mind in the days ahead. Similar to life events, it's important to recognize and remember these moments as they play an important role in who we are and where we are going. Onward.
