People typically seek the light, and when darkness is in their way, they cower. Some of us don't mind taking some long walks in darkness to figure out what makes that happen, but for the most part, darkness casts a shadow on people's psyche and openness--they don't want to be mired in tales of woe, challenges, and dismal events--instead they seek the hopeful, positive, promising.
When dealing with people this is good to remember, and especially good to remember if you are a person who doesn't mind intersecting with the details of pain and suffering of any kind. Keep the conversation light, be positive, listen, and uplift as often as you can to create positive camaraderie and good will. Onward.
