Grandiosity

Everyone experiences grandiosity from time to time. When we experience that emotion, we feel on top of the world and better than anyone else. Grandiosity are moments when we feel like we have all the answers--times when we feel invisible, all knowing, and right. Typically when I experience grandiosity something knocks me back to reality quite quickly, and rarely do I experience this top-of-the-world, me-first emotion for long.

Of course, some experience grandiosity in the extreme--these people rarely understand that they can be wrong and that others may have worthy capacity or value. This kind of persistant grandiosity leads to a narrow perspective of life and can be dangerously isolating.

How can we counter grandiosity in ourselves and in others. First, elements of character truly help us to embrace each individual and organization with a tempered respect, open mind, and appropriate attention. When we are open to the strengths and wisdom of others, grandiosity wanes and collaboration rises. For others, we can acknowledge their need for self affirmation, and via actions rather than words open their minds and hearts to the variation of good people and actions that exist.

No one in our world is superhuman. At times, some people have more of what's right and good and popular for the times we're in and that may make them seem superhuman, but in reality, no one has the monopoly on good living. Grandiosity exists and it can be a debilitating emotion and experience in multiple ways. Best to deal with it with compassion and a will to counter it with respect, humane, and balanced responses and living. Onward.
