Many wise individuals instruct us to live in the day and be present. Rather than always looking around the corner and wondering what is next, embrace the moment you are in. Lately, as I deal with those with dementia, I am learning this lesson with greater strength. Grave illness, your own or someone else's directs you to being present in the moment and making the most of the time you have. That is one meaning I can draw from such an experience.
So as I coach myself to live in the present rather than always looking around the corner, what does that mean?
For me, that will include the following actions:
- Stopping to simply look around, take in the surroundings, and be grateful for the experience I'm engaging in.
- Doing what I can at that moment to be helpful, kind, positive.
- Learning by watching, listening, and engaging in the spaces and events I am in
- Acknowledging the good with gratitude regularly
It's not so much about where I am going right now as how I am being in the moment. Onward.
