Sometimes we underestimate how much energy our endeavor costs. For example, recently I hosted a beloved family member. I was so happy to see my loved one and did everything I could to make his visit special and caring. I used up a lot of energy in this endeavor--I didn't realize how exhausted I would be afterwards. The exhaustion was worth the wonderful visit, but what didn't work out was not planning a few down days after the loving weekend. I didn't accurately recognize the energy needed for such a special event.
A good weekly routine accurately estimates the energy needed for each event, and a good routine is a reasonable routine which doesn't use up all your energy too fast so you don't have any leftover for what is needed and valuable.
When considering the energy costs of various events, you have to understand the emotional costs too. For example, when I work with my loved ones with dementia, my energy is quickly depleted, and that's mainly because of the great emotional cost of seeing a loved one face that disease. It is very difficult to see those you love change dramatically and that's what dementia does to a person. I've been learning about ways to lessen that emotional toll, but so far, the situation remains a costly endeavor with regard to energy.
Some endeavor actually adds to your energy. For example, I've signed on to some health coaching and while the activity is challenging, the energy gain is amazing. Similarly I've found that meeting friends outdoors for walks and talks in beautiful places greatly enriches my energy too. And as always, creative endeavor focused on creativity for those I love and care about provides an energy boost as well.
As our lives change, we have to rethink our routines with good energy in mind--what kinds of routines keep your energy fresh, full, and positive? That's the aim. Onward.
