About a year ago I began to establish a weekly caretaking routine for loved ones. So many aspects of the routine have been successful including the following:
- Setting the stage for success with needed materials and spaces that set the stage for independence, comfort, and care.
- Utilizing outside supports when needed such as online ordering and shipment of needed supplies and groceries.
- Regular review of critical information mainly via online documents.
- Regular routines of house cleaning, filling medicine boxes, meal preparation, and personal care.
- Reading and researching areas of concern and confusion.
- Adding extra care support to make time for medical appointments and respite
Recently, I've been learning to follow my mom's sage advice to take each day as I coach myself to be open minded and flexible with the variability of the situation--every day is different. I also try to stay positive, look for the joy, and celebrate the small wins. For example, yesterday when the chaplain visited, my mom and I told him stories of my mom's childhood. That made my mom smile with true joy and that was a great win.
In the weeks ahead, I'll continue the routines set and stay flexible wih regard to the changes that will occur. I'll also focus on the following important efforts:
- Preparing for warm holiday celebrations
- Finding ways to recognize and show respect and gratitude to the many people who make up the caretaking team
- Looking for additional ways to bring the joy
It is good to step back and assess the routines of life regularly as that helps us to improve what we can do in any situation. Onward.
