Mom & Dad at Lunch |
My mom would often remark, "Take each day," when we discussed problematic issues. I often felt that advice was shortsighted as to simply focus on the day made it difficult for me to set goals and work ahead, but now as my parents are living in their ninth decade with grace, humility, and as much positivity as possible, they are clearly illustrating to me that there is value in being present and living each day to the fullest.
There is less and less predictability about life as you get older. You don't know how you will feel or what challenges you'll face day to day, and that's why a day-to-day focus works well. Also when you take a day-by-day focus you're open to the serendipity and surprise that being present brings.
In the months past, my parents experienced their fair share of challenges. My mom has especially faced some health challenges. Yet yesterday when they arrived at my home for dinner, they were full of positive energy and bright spirits. It was a joyful visit that illustrated the positivity of my mom's sage advice, "Take each day." Using her outlook, I'll move forward ready to meet the day's challenges and enjoy the day's joys too. Onward.
