The sleep quotient

In the past, I didn't take sleep seriously enough. I often bartered sleep to make headway in other life arenas, but as I get older and read more about the benefits of sleep, I know that sleep will not longer be a bargaining chip--good sleep is essential.

First of all, lack of sleep has been linked to alzheimer's. I want to do what I can to avoid that disease as I've had a first hand look at how challenging that is. I wish I paid attention to sleep earlier, but no better time to start that focus than now.

Next, getting enough sleep keeps you happier and healthier--who doesn't want to live a healthy, happy life. When you read the connection between poor sleep and unhealthy weights, it will really make you want to make time for adequate sleep in your life.

And, as an educator, I know that sleep plays a pivotal role in children's happiness and success too.

Too many in society model poor sleep habits, and society, in general, does not give sleep the attention it deserves. We see people of multiple fields constantly modeling routines that include poor sleep habits and this does no one any good.

It's time for society to embrace the value of sleep in everyone's schedule as we work towards better living.
