Visiting the relatives

I always enjoyed reading the story, The Relatives Came by Cynthia Rylant, since it was so much like the many visits I made to relatives during my life. Many a day our family was busy preparing good foods, packing clothes, piling into the car, and taking off to a beloved family member's home for a day of play. Often we picked up a fresh dozen doughnuts or sweets from a local bakery to bring with us. Sometimes we rode our bikes and for those relatives who lived close by, we simply walked to their homes for a good times.

Today, after a long hiatus, we'll take a similar trip to visit my Aunt Betty. A visit to Aunt Betty's house in the past always meant that we would have plenty of kids to play with (she has nine children), eat good food, spend time in a beautifully decorated and clean house, play in a pool or vast woods near her home, possibly ice skate, play games, and listen to stories. Aunt Betty is my godmother too. She always gave me nice presents on my special days and attended all the special ceremonies in my life. Her daughter, Judy, was always my best cousin growing up and now she continues to be a good, wise friend.

I'm looking forward to visiting Betty in her new home. We will celebrate her upcoming birthday. I don't know exactly what to expect as it has been quite some time since we had a visit with Betty. I'll report back later.

Afterward

The visit was terrific. My mom and her sister exchanged so much love and care for one another. My cousin and husband contributed greatly to making the event happen, and my dad was a patient, loving companion throughout the event.
