Cleaning house

Before any big event, I have the need to clean house which literally means clean my house and metaphorically means centering myself--cleaning up my mind to be able to fully enjoy the event.  So with that in mind, I generally review life's challenges and make as much peace with my physical and cerebral environments so I'm ready to give my whole self to the event.

Literally, cleaning the house generally means staying true to that old adage, everything in its place and a place for everything. I've been working to reach that point for decades and with every year I get closer. Of course, it's a lot easier to clean a house that only two older adults live in than a house that's filled with multiple generations of people. And when it comes to cleaning that cerebral house--the mind, that means thinking about the good relationships you share with others, your values, dreams and outlook--refreshing and resetting.

Relationships

Though never perfect, I've thought a lot about the many relationships I've enjoyed over time. Of course, there are regrets, but I've learned from those errors, and I'm moving ahead with greater respect and a more open mind to the connections I have with people going forward. Bottom line is that I want to be a good friend and family member, and I want to support the good people are capable of and the dreams they desire in life. I want people to have their best possible lives and I recognize that there's no one-size-fits-all definition of best possible lives--it is a somewhat different scenario for all of us, but a scenario that includes some standard elements such as loving relationships and the opportunity to be who you are.

Routines

Refining and reworking routines has been a big focus for me because I know that a good pattern of life can help you to have a positive life. It's been hard work to rewire many routines, and the routines that I've improved have brought me great satisfaction. There's definitely more work to do in this area, but I will clearly stay dedicated to this quest since the results are so gratifying.

Values and Focus

Taking the time to shore up your values so that you live by those values is a great way to clean the cerebral house and prepare for a big event. For me, I want people to know that I appreciate them and that I want the best for them. I also value simply putting your worries behind you, and enjoying a good time. Serious people like me have to remind ourselves of that prior to big events. Further, I value the good work and dedication we can bring to one another's lives and I want to find ways to do that.

Stop, look and listen

I want to stop now and then to simply take in the goodness all around me--when life is too harried, we miss the beauty and wonder that abounds.

So today, I'll work at cleaning house both physically and metaphorically--that's a good way to prepare for a special event. Onward.
