A big day for loved ones is coming up. This makes me think about those big days in my life. One of my earliest and most memorable big day was the day we took off for a summer vacation when I was five. Dad and Mom bought us special clothes and toys for the vacation. I could feel the thrill of excitement bolting through my body--that was a big day.
As I grew older there were many big days including birthdays, holidays, family celebrations, graduations, First Communion, Confirmation, my wedding day, the births of my children and more vacations. The best big days were well planned with room for error. When the schedule was too tight and we're not planned as well as we could be, the big days were not quite as good. Also big days when my needs or expectations didn't match the event were sometimes tiresome.
So as I approach this big day, I'm thinking about the preparation, plans and expectations. My expectations are to simply enjoy seeing the people I have loved over time--people I have shared so many wonderful memories with and people who have brought joy, comfort and even positive challenge to my life. As far as the preparation goes, we're ready and now it's time to simply enjoy. Onward.
