Greener pastures

We are often lured by what seem like greener pastures, but sometimes those attractive spaces are not what they seem, instead those greener pastures may lure us because those are places where we can easily deny and avoid what it is that we really should do.

Think carefully about the spaces that lure you and why--make sure that those spaces call you for reasons that hold value for your life today and into the future.

I thought about this recently as I was lured to a familiar place, a place that is somewhat comfortable and a place that I know I can succeed in. Yet, in too many ways, that's a space where I don't belong right now. Instead, there's a more challenging, less popular place that I need to be--a place that has long lasting value for my family and me. While this place where I should be includes some sacrifice and requires good discipline, it is where I need to be.

The draw of the greener pasture, however, is strong because of familiarity and comfort--it's a known path, and so often we are drawn back to what we know and where we feel comfortable, but if we take the time to think deeply about that pull, we can then discern whether that is a right move or not.

Choosing what is right rather than what is familiar will require some intentional shifts with regard to words and choices.

Responses

How we respond to people's questions affect your choices and the success with those choices. When you make decisions that are less common or understood, people may query you about those choices. They may also share attitudes that affect the confidence you have with regard to those choices. Figuring out a few good statements to quell uncomfortable conversation can be helpful with regard to keeping your confidence and convictions strong.

Actions/Decisions

Making a list of behavioral shifts may help you to stay true to the choices you are making may help. If your choice deviates from what you know well or what connects more to the mainstream, your actions won't be natural. You may have to rely on a list. For example if you're used to dining out with friends, but the new choice requires more careful use of your dollars, you may replace dining out with dinner in.

The Long View

You won't be disappointed with your decision if you've got the long view in mind. To keep choosing for yesterday rather than tomorrow will not leave you as satisfied in the long run. Short term discomfort and sacrifice will lead to long term value and strength.

The greener pastures that should lure us are the places that will help us to live the lives we know are best for us and those we love and care about. Onward.
