Healthy Holidays!

I made an old-time traditional meal for loved ones recently only to find that they didn't eat much of what I prepared and I felt sluggish afterward. I fell back on some now outdated traditional foods that have since been labeled as not that healthy or good for you. I did that because I thought my loved ones would appreciate a meal we enjoyed many times together, but I was wrong. Like so much of the world, my loved ones have adopted new and healthier diets with foods that energize them and make them feel good.

Similarly, at recent family events, I've found that there are a lot of sweets left over but the giant bowl of salad is empty--again, people are choosing what's healthy. Fewer people are drinking alcohol and more are desiring high protein meals with lots of veggies and a few sweet or salty treats that are truly special, not humdrum desserts or snacks off any store shelf.

As I think of these experiences, I'm thinking about how to revise our many holiday traditions to make them healthier and more attractive to my friends and loved ones. What changes will I make?

Protein

Since we know that protein is really good for us, it is important to have plenty of foods with lots of protein available. When you go out to dinner, it's often true that the meals are full of carbs, but little protein. This will take some creativity and study, but I'll make tasty protein dishes a mainstay.

Fresh fruits, veggies, nuts and cheeses

Friends brought a delicious fruit salad to our house for dessert recently--it felt so good to have a dessert that was that delicious and healthy too. Preparing lots of fresh, high quality fruits and vegetables really add both health and good taste to meals. For example, an apple crisp made with little sugar, oatmeal and great apples is much healthier and, in my opinion, just as tasty as apple pie. Buying high quality, tasty cheeses and cutting small pieces provides a great treat for appetizers or desserts. Having good nuts on hand provide both protein and a great snack.

Good breads

The smell and taste of bread is something I'm not ready to give up, but I will give up breads that are not that tasty and overly processed. I'd like to make my own breads and rolls for the holidays or at least get the best breads from a high quality local bakery.

Sweets and alcohol

We won't give up sweets and alcohol altogether, but instead choose high quality and have much much less.

Air popped popcorn

Air popped popcorn provides a crunchy snack for ball games that beat the store bought snacks.

Indoor/outdoor games and adventure

Adding indoor and outdoor games, adventures and exploration to the palate also brings great camaraderie, cheer and healthy fun.

Honestly to serve your loved ones a tasty, healthy meal is a great gift, much better than an unhealthy meal laden with ingredients that leave everyone feeling bad. This is one way to have a healthy holiday.
