When I think of Christianity, I think of Jesus Christ and his selfless actions/teachings. I also think of Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Mandela and others who heeded Christ's words related to justice, humanity and service. Sometimes when troubled, I'll ask myself, What would Jesus do?
Few to none of us are true Christians because to be a true Christian means that you have few to no possessions and you spend all your time helping others. So while we have to admit that we are not as Christian as Christ, we can move in that direction by ensuring that we spend our time helping one another as much as possible in peaceful, humane, loving ways.
Many in our society call themselves Christians and use that word simply to gain support for their self serving, dangerous and destructive agendas. These me-first individuals do a lot of harm rather than help. For example, many have pointed to the poor refugees as problems, but true Christians instead would be offering them food, shelter, and jobs. They would be working toward betterment for every person, not making the destitute, compromised or distanced, the enemy.
As an individual who considers herself all religions and none since I have respect for the good of every religious tradition and disdain for the bad within each of these human-created religions. No religion is perfect in all way and no religion is without any good. I value a lot about my Christian upbringing, and there are aspects of that upbringing which I have had to revise.
To study Christ's teaching is to empower one's ability to be humane, loving and good. To practice what Christ preached is an awesome task that few truly accomplish, but it is something we can reach for and if we do reach for that we will be better for it. Onward.
