During 2021, there were a few surprises and lessons. I could not have predicted these surprises or lessons.
Relationship challenge
Two long-held, loving relationships were greatly challenged in 2021. I waded into what I thought were comfortable waters, the kind of landscape where I could speak freely without any worries. Yet, when I did speak freely, my words were met with great challenge, anger and anguish. I touched a sensitive spot with these long-loved friends.
What I learned is that no matter how close you are to another person, you have to mindful of your words and delivery. We are all very sensitive people, and to be cavaliar wth your approach to others can result in relationship struggle and pain. I underestimated the affects that life events had on these friends--I wasn't listening as carefully as I should have been and I wasn't using enough patience with my responses. In one situation, the pain has abetted and the relationship is on good terms, and in the other situation, time will tell what the end result will be. Lesson learned: Be kind, patient, and respectful at all times with all relationships.
Relationship warmth and love
2021 also found me rethinking and deepening many relationships in my life. I got better at thinking about who the good people in my life are and what I can do to love them more and better. This has brought me great joy and the lesson learned is that the more we deeply and lovingly invest in the people we love, the better our lives will be.
Simplicity is rich
While not a new lesson, the lesson that simplicity is rich became more ingrained in me. Tehe more we prioritize and simplify our lives, the more time and energy we have for what brings us the greatest grace, love and good living. I still have work to do to simplify more, but I love the power for good living this lesson brings.
These have been the big lessons for me for 2021. What did you learn? What brought value to your life in 2021?
