A gift for everyone

Our family has a Yankee Swap rather than give every member of the family a gift--it's a good way to make the holiday celebratory and affordable. But this year, I want to give each family member a small, meaningful gift. I want to do this as a way to connect to each family member at a time when we've seen less of each other due to the pandemic and many other life events, and at a time when our family is changng due to my parents' health conditions and our many personal changes related to jobs, children, interests and more. As I think about this, I am thinking about what kinds of gifts I'll give.

Photos

I have a big collection of family photos, so for some, the gift will be a significant photo in a frame. These photos will highlight special times in life, times that celebrate individuals' special traits, experiences and gifts.

Books

Some will receive books--books that I've read and books that have significance to who we are as a family. I'll add notes to these books, mostly used since some are out of print, that tell of the book's significance to our connections or family history.

Foods

For some, the gifts will be food items that fill a need for a good meal or sweet treats.

Money

Some may receive a few dollars if that's what I think is best for them.

Jewelry

While I have very little jewelry since I tend to lose it, I have a few pieces passed down that may become gifts for the younger generation.

Homemade gifts

Last year I made ornaments for many, I may do that this year too.

Bought gifts

I found a few things in stores that I thought would be perfect for people, so I'll give a few of those gifts too.

I feel the desire to give everyone a small gift this year. For me, the holidays are not about buying big, expensive gifts as much as letting people know that you love and care for them, and sometimes a good way to do this is to give them a small, thoughtful gift. Onward.
