Communicating with someone who does not understand

We all bring different levels of understanding to conversations, but for the most part, adults know when they understand and know when they don't understand. Yet, there are times when we communicate with people who for a variety of reasons may not understand what you have to say, and that's challenging.

What can you do?

I experienced this today as I tried to relay a message to an individual who simply didn't understand what I was talking about. I tried to make the message as simple as possible, but still the meaning was lost in translation. Fortunately there were others nearby who could relay the message via actions and not just words, and the actions should bring about a good level of comprehension.

When working with people who have difficulty understanding, you have to factor in the extra level of communication into every plan and occassion. Today, the plans in place did not take that into account. Lesson learned.
