It has almost been two years since I retired from teaching. It's hard to believe that a career I committed a good seventy hours a week to is now past. What is equally surprising is that the passion I had for teaching my students well every day has also passed in many ways. While I still believe in the value of a good education for every child, my heart and mind are now devoted to other causes closer to home. The change happened more quickly than I imagined, but when I think of my focus now, it's not surprising as it is a time when many in my family need me, and I do love being there for my family.
As I spoke to a doctor friend who is considering semi-retiring, I did mention that it takes time to move on to a new stage in life. That is a natural response. Before I moved on, I found myself increasingly ready for this next stage--a stage where being a daughter, mom, partner, sibling, and friend takes precedence over a professional career.
The focus in this new stage is quite simple including the following themes:
- presence
- service
- a warm, welcoming home
- generosity
- good energy and health
- happiness and care
