This week a somewhat big challenge came my way. At first, it seemed like a giant, insurmountable brick wall, but then as I deconstructed the challenge, the problem seemed much more manageable. I remember feeling the same way when my first son went to college. When we received the bill, I wondered how we'd pay such a big bill, but then when we deconstructed the challenge, it became much more manageable. To deconstruct big challenges is to find a way to reach those goals and meet those challenges.
The illustration to the right sums up the strength of breaking down big challenges into lots of small steps as this is the best way to reach a tough goal. Take it apart.
Dream of the finish line
When considering the challenge, what is the finish line you hope for? Where do you want to be once this challenge is complete? It is important to have a clear, detailed, loose-tight vision for where you are headed. Make time to dream.
Work backwards
Working backwards and step-by-step figure out a plan to get to the place you hope to be. You may have to do some research in order to create this plan. Notice what others have done with a similar challenge. Look for the resources out there to help you.
Chart your plan
Write out your plan step-by-step. Put that plan in a place that you can regularly consult. Change the plan as needed.
Take it step-by-step
One step after another, work for your dream.
Analyze, reflect, revise as needed
All along the way, stop to analyze, reflect and revise as needed. All good plans will meet with challenges and unexpected supports--life is always changing and this will impact the plans you have. Change accordingly.
Celebrate the small wins
Make time along the way to celebrate the small wins as you work for your dream.
Assess and celebrate your accomplishment
When you arrive at your dream destination, assess your accomplishment. Was the journey worth it? What were the high points and low points? What did you learn about future dream journeys? Where will you head next? How will you celebrate your accomplishment?
This is a good strategy for achieving those big dreams you have in life. I plan to apply this strategy to a few dreams I have today. Onward.
