It is great to gain the respect of others, and it's not so great to experience a lack of respect. When people don't respect you, they don't acknowledge what you do, who you are or what you may need. Disrespect shows its hurtful face in many ways. Sometimes people may ignore you, discount you, work around you, or disparage you. However disrespect is shown, it never feels good.
We may knowingly or unknowingly disrespect others as well. When we act in ways that discount someone's feelings or ignores their circumstances, we act with disrespect. When we speak poorly about people or not include them in matters that affect them, we disrespect them.
The more we can exercise acting and speaking with respect, the more we will garner the respect of others since to give respect is to gain respect. Experiencing disrespect may be a signal that you can increase the respect you show to others. To experience disrespect may also demonstrate that you need to be a bit more discerning about who you surround yourself with and what direction you follow.
Respect is a key ingredient to good living, one that's worth prioritizing in your life. Onward.
