Tax dollars at work: dignity and care

Yesterday I brought my dad to a doctor's appointment at the new Veteran's Outpatient Clinic at the UMass Medical School Chan Campus. The beautiful building was wonderfully set on the land just above Lake Quinsigamond. The parking was easy, and upon entry a kind man welcomed us, showed us how to check in, and lead us to the waiting area. This was such an improvement from the worn out building that used to house the clinic on Lincoln Street. As we met with medical professionals, it was clear that this clinic represented tremendous investment of time, money, professional ethics, skill, and dedication to sensitive, quality care and compassion.

While in the building and taking part in the appointments, I noticed the dignity displayed and exchanged between and amongst veterans and medical staff. It was clear that this investment of a state-of-the-art building and health care uplifted the people served and the people working there. It was also a great way to demonstrate respect and gratitude for the commitments veterans have made to the United States over time.

I wish we could create places of service like this everywhere in our communities--beautiful, state-of-the-art schools, hospitals, health clinics, social service agencies, recreation places and more to serve one another in the best possible ways. This is one way to spend our tax dollars to uplift the opportunities, health, and good living all around us. We can do this and we should do this. Onward.
