Doors

Ted Cruz is blaming an open door for the massacre in Uvalde.

I admit I thought about that door because when I worked as a teacher, doors were always an issue. We were told to keep doors locked, but there were hundreds of good reasons why the doors where open. Here are a few:

  • You bring the children out for recess and Johnny realizes he left his lunch box on the playground. You can't bring everyone back out for the lunch box, so you let Johnnie run out and get it. He leaves the door open.
  • You decide to let some children work outside and some inside. You leave the door open for easy access. You divide the class to make more space, add more comfort, get more air during the waning, hot days of the school year.
  • You have to run out to your car to get a supply that will make the difference in a lesson--you prop the door open to run out. You have to run fast in order to get back to the students. You're mostly all alone with lots of children so there's no one to watch the class when you get this transformative supply.
  • The school is hot, you want more air.
  • There's a bee in the classroom, you open the door to usher it out.
  • You're bringing all the kids in. Two kids in the front of the line get in a big argument. You help them resolve but forget to shut the door.
  • A service worker comes to the school to rid the building of a bee's nest. He has to go back inside for a supply. He props open the door so he can get in and out.
  • A mom with a baby carriage is visiting for the awards ceremony. She goes out the back door and leaves it open.
  • The principal runs out to the playground to look for a student whose parents are there to take him to hid dentist appointment. When he's not on the playground, she runs around the front of the school to see if he's there. The door remains open.
Clearly Ted Cruz has never worked in a school for any length of time to realize that doors remain open for countless good reasons that occur when single individuals are watching and teaching lots and lots of children.

The real problem that led to the massacre was the easy access to assault weapons and the lack of supports, help, or oversight for struggling, deranged, and deadly individuals who seek to destroy.

Ted Cruz like all Trump Republicans continually use propaganda to distract the public from the solutions that truly enrich and better lives. They are deadly self-servers who seek to prop up their personal wealth, power, privilege, protection and pleasure rather than enrich and better lives all across the United States. We cannot continue to elect deadly individuals like this, and we must hold them accountable for the destructive deeds they employ. Onward.
