My family right now is like a whirlwind because many people's lives are filled with change--changing jobs, changing locations, changing homes, changing interests and more. While the changes are positive, they do bring me pause because I want to engage with these changes in ways that support a strong, loving, caring family. How can I help? What is my role in the midst of these changes?
Celebrate the accomplishments
Many of the changes happening reflect accomplishments such as good work at jobs and school. It is important to acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of your loved ones. These celebrations reward the good work and investment as well as energizing us to accomplish more.
Support the changes
We can help with the changes by packing and moving boxes, readying new living spaces, lending needed materials and finding ways to visit and learn about the new places where my loved ones will live.
Talk about priorities
Making time to talk about priorities amidst the changes helps people to stay rooted during the sometimes stressful commotion of change. Transitions are time consuming and can be worrisome too. Being there to listen, advise as needed, and lend support helps people to transition well.
Update traditions
With change comes the need to update traditions in ways that are inclusive and respectful of people's changing lives and needs.
Listen and contribute
As my children engage in their adult lives, it becomes more important for me to listen more and help out as they request that help. I'm not in charge like I was when they were young, but I'm still ready and willing to help and guide as needed.
For my loved ones, more than anything, I want them to have good lives that include lots of love, healthy living, care for others, fun, and positive contribution to the greater community. At every juncture in the road and particularly during times of change, it's important to revisit your family priorities to ensure that your family is healthy and happy moving forward. Onward.
