Good sacrifice, bad sacrifice

Sometimes we make the decision to sacrifice our time, energy, money, endeavor for a greater good. We often do this because we are committed to working for values that bring meaning to life. Many of us have sacrificed our own interests for the welfare of our children, and few of us regret that sacrifice because we want to see our children live good lives for themselves and others. We also may sacrifice dollars, time, energy for causes we believe in, people we love, community welfare and more.

When the our sacrifices result in the greater good, we know that it was a decision well worth our time, energy and resources, however sometimes we may sacrifice in ways that do not result in the greater good, and that's when it is time to make change.

One example is when we sacrifice time and money for individuals who turn out to be unworthy of our time and money. I remember once when I supported a leader who I thought would be an awesome mentor to many. The leader instead turned out to be a disaster. I withdrew my support.

Another example of poor sacrifice is when you devote your time, energy and money to an endeavor that you think will be wonderful and then you learn that the endeavor is not worth your sacrifice and there's better work to support instead.

When we sacrifice to support people or endeavors, we do this with our best knowledge at that time. As time moves along our sacrifice may be affirmed for all the right reasons or our sacrifice may turn out to be ill-directed and a poor choice. That's when we have to make change.

As with all choices in life, we have to continually review our choices and then make needed changes. We can do this. Onward.
