Many of us come from homes where relaxation was equated to sloth, laziness, and negativity. If you were relaxing, you were likely avoiding a necessary task. We were reprimanded for relaxing, doing our own thing, and being the people we naturally are. Yet, when we take the time to relax, we make the time to replenish, and when we replenish, our energy is extraordinary with regard to the efforts we enjoy and the contributions we make. On the other hand, when we never relax, we're jittery, anxious, cranky, tired and without the good energy possible.
It's okay to relax, and sometimes to relax, we have to say that to ourselves and to others.
What is relaxing? Relaxing is giving in to your need to simply be at peace. Whether that means sitting or sleeping in a comfortable spot, watching a great movie, reading a book, drawing a picture or hanging out with your best friends, it's a time when there is little to no obligation, push or need to extend more energy than you have.
Making relaxation a regular part of your routine is not only a gift to yourself, but a gift to all those you nurture, love and care for too. It's never comfortable to be around someone who is constantly exhausted, agitated or unnecessarily weak, but it's energizing to be around people who have good, bright, positive energy. People with good energy make time to relax.
So next time you feel the urge to relax, don't fight it. Give in and let your body and mind get the replenishment it needs for you to be your best self. Onward.
