We do our loved ones a big favor if we give them the time and support to figure out who they are rather than trying to fit them into tight, uncomfortable molds. Yet, learning who you are is a lifelong endeavor--we're always discovering ourselves with greater depth throughout our life.
Just yesterday I realized with greater depth my need for time and space. An unexpected event encroached upon my otherwise home haven of serenity. I lost my freedom to freely enjoy my yard and home due to unexpected noise and commotion. The event will be short-lived and soon I'll regain my heavenly peace. This event made me realize just how much I love serenity, space, time and natural beauty. My home is truly my "Little Corner of the World" and there is rarely much disruption here. For me, that is a great gift that matches who I am while providing me inspiring space to create, make, reflect and connect.
I've always been that person who seeks a quiet corner. To meet me, you might not think that's true since I have an extroverted side too that enjoys meeting new people and engaging in collaborative projects and events. But, looking back, I can see that serenity side was always there. In my earliest days, I put the light on in the closet so I could draw my dreams in bed. During Sunday afternoons, I hid away in the basement den to watch old movies and musicals, and in college, I found peace in the school's music room where I could listen to my favorite songs, write in my journals, and observe the busier happenings outside on campus via the big windows in that room.
As the eldest child of six, I often ran across the street to my Nana's house on weeknights to get some peace and quiet. Nana and I would watch her favorite TV shows, share a snack and talk a little. I'd also listen to her talk on the phone with friends and family members. I loved the peace Nana's house provided.
When I first went off to college, unlike many of my classmates, I found the dorm quite peaceful compared to my busy home life with four younger brothers, one younger sister, Mom, Dad and a regular parade of visiting friends and relatives.
Everyone has their own personal best balance when it comes to noise vs quiet and socializing vs solitude. It's not exactly the same for any two people.
The more we learn about ourselves, the better we will be at making good choices about our lives. It's important that we provide children with that self-knowledge time and support. That will begin their journey of self discovery with strength. Onward.
