Prepping for the extended family reunion

Our big family has started gathering at a beach meet-up once a year. This is the second year of that tradition. Since the family is so big and varied, a beach meet-up provides an easy space to gather. People bring their own food, beach gear, and come if they'd like. It's not an expensive affair so almost everyone can afford it and we chose a place that's accessible to all ages. I was prompted to begin this event when a family member mentioned that the only times we see each other shouldn't be at wakes and funerals. So unlike sad events, this is a chance to get together, see one another and celebrate.

As I prepare for this meet-up reunion, I'm thinking about how I'll use my time to get the most out of the weekend.

Greetings

I hope I'll have a chance to say hello to every family member that comes. That depends on how many arrive and how the day goes, but our times to connect with one another are precious.

Fun

I always call the beach, the great equalizer, because there is something for everyone. You can sit and read, snack, swim, play beach games, converse, people-watch, take walks and more. For me, I plan to have some good old beach fun.

Close ties

I've carved out a few hours during the event for my closest relatives so we can catch up over leisurely meals, drives, walks, and talks.

Storytelling

It's always great to hear the stories family members have to tell. My extended family live all kinds of lifestyles in all kinds of places, their stories will be entertaining.

Meeting new family members

I'll have the chance to meet new family members too, girlfriends, boyfriends, children and others who have become members of our giant family.

Something to share

I'll bake some sweet treats and tasty appetizers to share. I'll fill the cooler with cold drinks, and bring along some games to share with those who come.

I'm glad we've set aside this informal time to gather. It does beat seeing each other only at funerals and wakes. Onward.
