As people, we are always evolving and changing yet there are deep threads related to who we are, what we think, and what we do that stay strongly embedded for better or worse. That was apparent to me as I read over some of my college journals and realized I'm still asking many of the same questions of life that I asked 40 years ago--perennial questions that apply to any life stage.
No matter how old we are, we still have the potential to develop and change. That old adage, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks," is actually false in many ways. I've seen lots of "old dogs" change their life ways in positive, life enriching ways. It's difficult to break old habits, but we can do it if that's important to us.
So who is the person you want to be and how will you get there?
Are you satisfied with your life with regard to health, relationships, pastimes, living situations, professional work and family or are there areas of your life you want to improve or change?
Once you identify areas for change, you can put the plan in place to make that difference. More than a year ago, I signed on to get some help with regard to some personal changes. The help was terrific and definitely supported a significant mindset shift that has helped me to be healthier--there's still work to do, but that was one positive step.
In many ways, September is a good time to begin a new year. The Fall weather is invigorating and beautiful, and life's routines seem to have a better framework than the celebratory days of summer. This is a good time to imagine the person you want to be and then make a plan to get there. Onward.
