I never thought a lot about the term, caregiver, but since the care taking journey is taking yet another corner, I think I'll switch to the term, caregiver, and as I think of this term, I'm thinking about how I'll give care during this next leg of the care taking journey.
The new corner marks the advent of a new caregiving team. Hospice "retired" my loved one from their services because she no longer fit the definition of who they serve and why they serve them. That meant we had to look for new supports. After a somewhat lengthy transition process that required completing detailed forms, meeting with new agency staff, and putting a plan in place, we've started this new chapter. It is wonderful to have a new team in place because these teams of caregivers know what they are doing and not only serve to help, but they also guide our efforts as a family with their skill and knowledge. My role once again is more reasonable and doable. Can you hear my sigh of relief!
So what's involved in this more reasonable role?
Assessment and support
When I visit, I'll assess what's happening and do what I can to help. Recently I reviewed the situation and found many supports in place as well as some work I could do to support best possible living.
Socialization and fun
I have time once again to plan some fun outings and get togethers to bring some joy and serendipity to the mostly routine days.
Projects
I hope I'll get to work with my loved ones on some home projects too.
Without the too-great daily caregiving duties, I know have time to give in a more reasonable, positive way. This is good.
