Sarcasm, condemnation, disrespect works against team

The language we use matters. And with respect to positive teaming, the language we use and the way we use that language can greatly ruin a sense of team. This stands in the way of the good work possible.

Looking back on life, I wish I realized the power of a good team more. As I've grown older, I have realized that we truly can accomplish more in better ways if we work as a strong team. Yet, teaming is often overlooked and under valued.

I remember back to a time when I greatly wanted to improve an area of teaching and learning at school. While we had a big team, there was little sense of positive teamwork. Instead this situation was relegated to a tight hierarchy instead. And within the hierarchy, there was greater value given to very tight and specific roles rather than to building a sense of a dynamic team. The walls that stood between people's roles and levels within the hierarchy served to deter the good teamwork needed to make change. Hence, good change didn't occur, and instead progress was stagnated.

So as I think ahead to work I'd like to do, I want to put greater emphasis on building a strong sense of team, and I want that teamwork to be based on loving work and effort. As a first step, I want to focus on language--the language I use and the way I use language. I want my language to be humble, respectful, and loving. In addition, rather than use a lot of language, I want to listen a lot.

Teamwork is clearly the best way to achieve significant success, and the way you use language contributes greatly to the success or failure of teamwork. Using language wisely is one way to build a strong team. Onward.
