Every year I like to change up the holiday traditions in ways that add some warmth and surprise to the holiday. These efforts let people know in small ways that I care about them. What will I do this year to make this holiday special?
Home crafted gifts
I want to make a few home crafted gifts. I have some sentimental ideas in mind, and the job is to set aside time to complete these crafts.
Decorating with Dad
This will be Dad's first Christmas in 70+ years without Mom. I asked him when he was going to put up the tree, and he responded, 'Should I do that." I responded with a YES. Yet, I understand how emotional this might be for him. Yet, my siblings and I will help him decorate the house with cheer.
Special foods
I'll make some goody baskets for loved ones too.
Spontaneous surprises
Last year I was able to give a few spontaneous surprises which likely brought me even more joy than the recipients. Hopefully I'll be able to do that this year too.
Heirloom gifts
I may give a few heirloom gifts--gifts of special objects I have but never use or need anymore, objects that I believe will have some value to others. I don't want to be one of those people that ends life with a houseful of objects that eventually turn up in a big yard sale. I want to purposefully give away items over time instead.
Time
For the most part, I want to enjoy the fact that this holiday season will be an un-rushed season that leaves me with good time to enjoy the people I love.
What will you do to make the holiday season special this year? Will there be some serendipity and surprise?
