Doug Flutie is a local, and perhaps national, hero because of his football career and the work he and his family have done to support those with autism. Yet, recently he stood on the stage to show his support for senatorial candidate Herschel Walker. Walker like many other MAGA candidates has proven time and again that he does not have the honest character, experience, or readiness to be a senator of the United States. His speeches demonstrate a compromised man who is seemingly willing to do what his MAGA benefactors tell him to do rather than lead with integrity, honesty, or the ability to serve the people well. Just recently, Walker's tax returns demonstrated that he is a legal resident of Texas, not Georgia, where he is running for office. And, his anti-abortion stance does not represent his own actions of promoting abortion for women he had relations with. The far better candidate for this race is Reverend Raphael Warnock. Knowing what we know about Walker's dehumanizing and compromised stance, why would Doug Flutie support him?
Bottom line is that we are what we do, and we can't lose sight of that. We can't continue to see ourselves through past actions, but instead, constantly re-evaluate who we are via what we do today.
As I thought about this, I thought it would be a good idea to list your last ten actions. What were the last ten things you did that took thought, choice, and action. For me, those actions included the following.
10. sleep
9. An evening with my husband
8. Dinner, watching the news
7. Shopping for holiday wear and meal prep.
6. Talking with my sister on the phone.
5. Preparing foods for Thanksgiving dinner.
4. Catching up with family members via text and telephone.
3. Time with my sons.
2. Coffee, reading, writing, more Thanksgiving prep.
1. sleep
What do these actions say about me? I'd characterize it by the title, simple living with a focus on family. Is that who I want to be? If I listed the top ten activities of the past week, how would that change the characterization?
We are what we do, and that's why every decision is important. Does Doug Flutie really want Herschel Walker to be a senator for the United States? Does Flutie really believe Walker will represent North Carolina and work for the people there in ways that uplift and enrich lives--does he think Walker is up to the job? Why or why not? Id like to understand that.
As for me, do my actions reflect the type of person I hope to be? What can I add, take away, or change to build a life that's more in line with my convictions?
Simply stated, what you do says a lot more about who you are than what you say--we are what we do, and that creates a good point of reflection for all of us.
