I love to give gifts. I always wish I could give more, but I give gifts relative to what I can afford. I enjoy choosing items that I think people will enjoy and use.
I am never quite comfortable receiving gifts. I probably feel this way as I don't want people to have to spend money on me. Yet there have been a few gifts I've received that totally improved my life. Those gifts have included sports equipment, travel plans, special pieces of clothing, framed significant photos, online/real time games, and home made goodies and crafts. Also, it's always special to know that someone has thought about you enough to bring you a gift.
When it comes to my discomfort with gifts, I realize that happens when I feel someone is giving a gift out of obligation rather than desire. I'd rather not receive a gift in those situations.
In general, the greatest gifts I enjoy in life are the following:
Time with those I love most
I love to be with the people I love most--that's a gift to me.
The opportunity to help and give to others
I truly enjoy helping others, and when I have just right opportunities to do that, I'm happy. Jus right opportunities mean that you have what the people need or want.
Adventures in nature
I love the opportunity to adventure in beautiful, natural settings. For example, a few years ago, my husband and I took a ferry to a mostly unpopulated island to bike all day--that was a great gift.
Fun games
I enjoy a good real time or online game, and I enjoy playing games with people.
Dinner out
The opportunity to relax with people I love at a dinner out is a great treat too.
As I begin this list, I realize there's a lot to add to this. Receiving and giving gifts can be a special aspect of life, and it's important to consider your relationship to gift giving in order for that to matter.
