A good way to find the right direction is to imagine the worst case scenario in any situation--to imagine the worst case scenario is a good way to direct your time, actions, efforts in a positive direction. For example, say you were in a very frustrating, horrible situation, and you had to act. Before acting, imagine the worst that can happen, and that will surely help you to choose a good path.
Recently police murdered a young man having a psychotic episode in a local neighborhood. Was there a better way to handle this--could the police have found a way to subdue the man rather than kill him? What was the worse case scenario in the situation? Perhaps the man was ready to kill innocent people or the police, and there was no way to avoid that, or perhaps the deranged man could have been stopped in another way resulting in getting him the psychological help he needed and not killing him. I'm not sure of all the facts, but to imagine the worst case scenario in any situation can help us do the right thing.
Often imagining the worst case scenario settles us down and makes us realize a situation is not so dire--we can ramp up our worries in ways that don't meet the reality of a situation, but imagining the worst case scenario can help us to calm down and see a situation for what it is. Onward.
