Setbacks are a normal part of any goal. As I think back on life, I remember many setbacks experienced by my family members and me. Those setbacks slowed down achievement with regard to specific goals, and those setbacks also opened doors to new opportunities and experiences.
How do you deal with a setback? What do you do?
Try to understand the setback
As with any problem, it is good to understand why a setback happened. Perhaps you moved too quickly or erratically towards a goal or maybe you didn't consider important details related to your goal work. Whatever the reason for the setback, to understand that as best you can helps you to avoid a similar setback later on. That said, some setbacks are difficult to understand or prevent. That happens.
Chart a new course
When a setback happens, you have to chart a new course towards your goal. Rethink the goal path and reset your efforts.
Take a break, get some rest, and be kind to yourself
Setbacks can be very discouraging, and often it is important to be very kind to yourself after a setback. That kindness can include extra rest and good times. For example, if you're facing a huge setback, you may want to take a weekend away at a beautiful place or treat yourself to a dinner out, good movie, or something else that's personally uplifting and satisfying.
Identify a cheering squad and support team
To have a dedicated cheering squad and support team can really help you to get back on track after a setback. Choose the people that you know will be there for you and confide in them about what you're trying to do and why. They'll likely be there to cheer you on, and that support can energize your efforts.
Setbacks happen to all of us, and it's important that we don't punish ourselves for these events, but instead reset the course. Onward.
