First Lady?

Should the role of First Lady be changed to the role of First Partner or First Teammate? While I am moved by the significant, honorable work of so many First Ladies over time, I think the role itself promotes oppression to women since it's an unpaid role with so many outdated expectations. I think it's time to change that role leaving room for a President to choose whoever they want to fulfill the role of First Partner or Teammate. I also believe the role should be a paid role.

Why do I think this is a good idea?

First of all, the role change allows the spouse of a President of the United States to choose the role they want. For example, say the President's partner is a young mother or father. They may want to focus their time and attention on their family rather than the public light. In a situation like this, they may choose not to be the First Partner, but instead play a quieter role closer to the immediate family.

Next, this opens the door for single individuals to become President and given the opportunity to choose a First Associate to assist in the leadership.

Also, what if the President is gay and/or a woman, and the partner is a male. Obviously that person won't be a First Lady. To change the title will broaden people's perspective of whom the President can be.

And, too many women over time have worked without adequate compensation. That's not fair. If we're going to have expectations for a First Partner or First Teammate it should come with a salary.

Do you agree?
