My loved one said, "I don't know why I'm so tired." I was tired too. That was unusual for the time of day, but as I thought about it, I realized that we had just both engaged in a new activity, something we had not done before. Typically, new experiences can be exhilarating, but also tiring. Unlike familiar experiences when you can anticipate each step, every step of a new experience requires thought and decision making--it's not familiar territory, but instead a series of novel steps which, in the end, is tiring.
Considering the exhaustion that comes with new experiences, is it worth it to engage in new activities? Of course it is, but you have to plan for the extra time and thought these new experiences bring. New experiences are not only tiring, but those experiences teach you a lot about who you are, what you like, what you dislike, and what's out there in the world. In we engage in the same-old, same-old all the time, we won't have as rich a life. New experiences enrich lives.
In thinking about the latest new experiences, we learned a lot about potential life paths. Some of what we noticed was not interesting to us, and some was of interest. We'll likely integrate the good we noticed and avoid the not-so-good. We'll also continue to try out new experiences as we revise life in positive ways giving ourselves space for the tiredness that comes with trying something new. Onward.
